Technology

The Federal Communications Commission has adopted an Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting the further distribution and sale of devices that operate in the 700 MHz frequency. According to the FCC, this action helps complete an important component of the DTV Transition by clearing the 700 MHz band to enable the rollout of communications services for public safety and the deployment of next generation 4G wireless devices for consumers. The order will primarily impact the use of wireless microphone systems that currently operate in the 700 MHz band. These unlicensed devices cannot continue to operate in this band because they may cause harmful interference to public safety entities and next generation consumers devices that will be utilizing the 700 MHz frequency. Thus, the Commission is making clear that no devices utilizing this frequency may be sold or distributed. In order to ensure that individuals and groups currently using unauthorized devices in this band have ample time to transition to appropriate frequencies, the FCC is providing a sunset period until June 12, 2010, one year from the DTV Transition. The Commission is also unveiling an aggressive consumer outreach plan in order to assist consumers who have previously purchased wireless microphone systems and other related devices that utilized the 700 MHz band. Through the Commission’s website, www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones, consumers can learn whether their wireless device is currently operating in the prohibited band and whether their devices may be returned to operate on another band. Consumers may also call 1-800-CALL-FCC to ask questions regarding this transition.

Tickets are $9.00 adults, $7.50 students and seniors and $6.00 members. Learn more about the film at www.EveryoneDeservesAShot.com.

NOTE: Mr. Kachadorian is available for interviews at (617) 320-0393.

“It’s important that history doesn’t forget these films,” said Robert Newton, managing director of the Cape Ann Community Cinema in Gloucester, “which is why we are remembering them on a day like Martin Luther King Day.”

The films are a collection of banned and censored cartoons made by the major studios between the 1930’s and 1950’s and collected by Newton, who lists film critic and video store owner on his long résumé. Most of the dozen films he will show on Monday, January 18th at 7:30pm are of a racial nature, and are so un-PC that one studio banished 11 of them to an infamous list of “The Censored 11″ in the 1960’s. These cartoon shorts, some of which included characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, were pulled from syndication and forever relegated to the vaults.

“We want people to come and view these films, laugh uncomfortably and think about why,” Newton added. “Hopefully, everyone will come away with a better picture of where as a country we’ve been, and how far we still have to go.”

There is no charge for this special night, which will take place at the Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester, though donations will be accepted.

“William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe” will have one special screening on Thursday, January 21st at 7:30pm. That night, the Cinema will also host Jack Hoffman, brother of late Worcester-born Chicago 8 defendant and Yippie icon, Abbie Hoffman. Hoffman will discuss Kunstler, the film, his life with Abbie and the Chicago 8 trial.

Movie casting call is a con trick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fans of the vampire movie saga Twilight are being targeted in
a bogus message claiming to be recruiting extras for the
fourth film of the series.
An email invites them to register for walk-on parts in the new
sequel, called Breaking Dawn, offering fees of up to $250 a
day and saying no experience is required.
People who sign up for free are then told they must pay to
view scheduling and location details of the casting call.
The reality: Recruitment of extras for this fourth film hasn’t
started (the third movie — Eclipse — hasn’t been released
yet) and when it does, there’ll be no charge for the details,
which, says a casting spokesperson, will be advertised.
With digital equipment, the costs of making movies have been decreasing for independents while the costs of tickets have been increasing. Will the costs of movies tickets ever reach the point where they are more than the cost to make it?
