If anyone has any information that they want to share with members, let me know so I can include it in the next newsletter. If possible please try and send the information several weeks in advance.

There may be an occasional email sent as a reminder for things such as events or perhaps potential job openings that need immediate attention.

We are still taking entries for the Five Minute Film Festival for students. Information and forms can be obtained from our web site. Remember, students can submit as many entries as they want.

*Film: STANLEY’S HOUSE - “There was no mistaking, the moment I stepped inside, that this was indeed the house of my childhood, the one I still dream about.” –Stanley J. Kunitz, November 11, 1985. The late Stanley Kunitz, Poet Laureate of the United States in 2000, wrote many poems about growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the house in which he lived as a child. Some of the Pulitzer Prize winner’s most memorable poetry illuminates his family, the search for his father who committed suicide six-weeks before he was born, his house, the neighborhood and his sense of place in Worcester. The 1918 classic Worcester three-decker house in which he lived now bears a plaque proclaiming the site’s importance in Stanley Kunitz’s life while growing up. Written and directed by Tobe Carey, who grew up in Kunitz’s beloved house, which Kunitz’s widowed mother commissioned. Come hear some of the poets of Cape Ann read Kunitz’s work at this special event to benefit the victims of the December 14 Middle Street fire. Call for Short Films by women filmmakers

Something Real is a film project to honor single mothers and women filmmakers. We are looking for short films with stories that empower women and explore women’s issues. Films selected will be shown at the Regal Arbor Cinema in Austin, Texas on March 24th, 2008 as a benefit for the National Partnership for Women and Families.

Entry deadline is February 29th, 2008.

Guidelines

1. While the film need not be about the struggles of a single mother, films which have a single mother as one of the characters will be regarded favorably.
2. Since this project is to recognize women filmmakers, at the very least, the
writer or director must be female.
3. The film may be of any genre.
4. The film cannot contain any scenes which might be construed as pornographic.
5. The film must be 3-20 minutes in length (not including end
credits).
6. Films must be submitted on DVD.
7. If your film is available for viewing online (on your web site or YouTube, for example), you may submit the film’s web address. If your film is chosen, you will need to provide a
DVD of the film for the screening.
8. There is no submission fee.
9. You may enter as many films as you want, but you must fill out an entry form for each film.
10. This is not a film competition. The
filmmakers will receive no prizes. They will, however, receive recognition and the opportunity to inspire and impact single mothers and other women filmmakers. Also, the proceeds of all ticket sales will go to the National Partnership for Women and Families (www.nationalpartnership.org).
11. If your film is selected, you will be notified by March 15th, 2008.

Please visit www.showmesomethingreal.com for more information and to download a submission form.

Title: Producers, Director & Writers. We want your Show Pitches.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Description: Rocket33.tv is an internet only channel launching in 2008 to a predominately male demographic. Think Saturday Night Live meets Mad TV, Jackass meets Wayne’s World, Howard Stern meets Spike TV and you get the idea… but always tastefully done. And with a very high production value.

This is not just another User Generated Content website, everything will be professionally produced and Rocket33.tv will feature content that has substance.

In addition to the 16 shows we currently have in production, we are looking for 8 programs to add to our schedule. We are now accepting pitches for 5-15 minute show ideas. If your treatment is selected, you will be paid to produce a pilot and if approved, another 10 episodes. We will also license your existing material if it fits within our guidelines of programming and quality standards.

Internet TV has a lot of flexibility as there is no regulation currently in place, so anything goes! But the programming must be appealing to a male audience and the concept needs to be developed enough to span multiple episodes.

Programming categories are (but not limited to);

Comedy
Drama
Sports
Reality
Animation
Light Politics/Talk Show
Documentary
Horror
Music
Game Show
Technology

But programming ideas must be kept in perspective so while there is a budget for each series, ideas that require a cast of a thousand, locations in Peru or helicopter shots will be rapidly dismissed. We are in the process of fitting out a 15,000 sq. ft. sound stage four-walled from camera to edit, so if your pitch is approved for production and you are located in the New England area you may have access to the studio.

Otherwise production must be HD/SD/24p/etc. and we need to see your previous work, so send your best reel. Please don’t send material you shot on your friends camcorder and unfortunately we cannot accept submissions without a reel. DO NOT SEND PITCH IDEAS AT THIS TIME. You must accept a disclosure agreement that protects both parties.

Good luck and we look forward to having you on our team!

Newsletter for w/e 1/17/08

We came up with a way to have the newsletter online.  I have a blog that I wasn’t updating.  However, I have been transferring the newsletter to the blog.  People can access it through the filmnorth.org website by clicking on FilmNorth Blog.  This can eliminate a lot of problems we have with email addresses and eliminate another piece of mail going to the spam filter.  Also, it will allow people to go back for some information that they might find useful.  I will continue with the newsletter for a few weeks and then will only send them out if something is significant.
The student Five Minute Film Festival is still looking for entries.  No decision will be made until the deadline is reached.

Festivals
The Independent Film Festival of Boston final submission deadline is coming up, January 31st! The festival will take place April 23-29 at the Somerville Theatre, Brattle Theatre, and Coolidge Corner Theatre. We are looking for narrative features, documentary features, short films, experimental films, horror, action, twisted, animation, gay/lesbian themed, you name it. We show it all.
As an added bonus for filmmakers submitting to IFFBoston, we will be curating a new video screening theater at the Somerville Theatre starting in June. We will be pulling IFFBoston alumni, as well as submitted films that we liked but didn’t make the final cut for the festival, for 1-week theatrical runs at a this busy theater with marquee, lots of street traffic, concessions, beer & wine bar, etc. We are looking to give good films that didn’t distribution otherwise an opportunity to get real theatrical runs rather than one-time screening opportunities. We will be looking for films for this in general, but for the first year or so we will mostly be pulling from our submissions as an extra thanks to filmmakers for submitting.
Hope to see all of your films soon. And see you at the festival!

Update

I haven’t update this for a long time.  I have been busy sending out a newsletter and decided to post it here.  This was the last one.  If I remember, I will be updating weekly.

There is still time to mention the student film festival to those who might be interested in sending in entries.  There is no cost to submit and they could win prizes.  Go to filmnorth.org for more information and entry forms.
It does appear as if there will be some type of film festival in Salem.  There is a lot to do and not much time, but in about two months there should be some type of event.  I will let you know as events get finalized.  For the time being, reserve the dates, February 29-March 6 on your calendar!
