The Salem Film Fest opens Thursday night with a fabulous, live talent show and then continues through next Thursday night with a beautiful, powerful, tender, incisive, and challenging lineup of award-winning films from all over the world.

If you don’t believe us, you can watch for articles in The Boston Globe, The Salem News (2), The Salem Gazette (4, including an article that was reprinted in editions all over the Boston area), WBZ-TV, and WBZ Radio, and more upcoming.

If you’d like to learn more about the films and the visiting filmmakers, please check out www.SalemFilmFest.com. You can also explore how to save tons of money by buying 8-Day, 3-day, or 1-day passes. For example, and 8-day pass will cost about 40% of what you’d pay for individual films and events.

In most film festivals, the movies are just the start of the fun. People love the Q & A after the screenings, the film-related forums (like this morning’s report on upcoming feature films shooting in the area, presented by Nick Paleologus from the Mass Film Office, starting at 8:30am at the Enterprise Center at SSC), or the parties like the Friday night bash at Gulu Gulu, or the Saturday night extravaganza at Finz.

FEBRUARY 28

*Name: Robert Newton

*Event Title: The Boston North Shore Film Festival Winter ‘08 Independent Film Series

*Date & Time: Thursday, February 28 @ 7:00pm

*Film: LIFE AFTER TOMORROW - Life After Tomorrow offers a glimpse of what the “Annie” experience was like and how it shaped the lives of the young women who have gone on to both performing and non-performing careers. Former orphans appearing in the film include MSNBC anchor, Dara Brown, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, recording artist Joanna Pacitti, Emmy award-winning actress Martha Byrne and songwriter Danielle Brisebois. One of the film’s producer-directors, Julie Stevens, was also at one time a cast member. For some, “Annie” marked the beginning of a fruitful career in show biz. Many were able to use the opportunity as a springboard to related careers in entertainment. For others, the incredible experience at such an early age was enough of a taste of show business to last a lifetime. Some girls found themselves struggling with feelings of loss and frustration with having their show business careers end so abruptly. As one cast member in the film remarks, “I feel like my career could not have peaked at ten!” [MOVIE WEBSITE] [Drama, 121 minutes] *Venue & Address: Gloucester Stage Company * 267 East Main Street * Gloucester, MA 01930 * (978) 281-4433

*Film: FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO - Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families – including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson – we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard’s Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, For The Bible Tells Me So offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity. FEBRUARY 21

*Name: Robert Newton

*Event Title: The Boston North Shore Film Festival Winter ‘08 Independent Film Series

*Date & Time: Thursday, February 21 @ 7:00pm

*Film: HONEYDRIPPER - Iconoclastic filmmaker John Sayles, in his 16th feature film, continues his extraordinary examination of the complexities and shifting identities of American sub-cultures in the new film “Honeydripper.” With his usual understated intelligence, Sayles uses the rhythms of the citizens of Harmony, Alabama to immerse the audience into the world of the Jim Crow south. It’s a fable about the birth of rock n’ roll-a quintessentially American subject, but with a fidelity to time and temperament that is unusual in an American director. It’s 1950 and it’s a make-or-break weekend for Tyrone Purvis (Danny Glover), the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge. Deep in debt, Tyrone is desperate to bring back the crowds that used to come to his place. He decides to lay off his long-time blues singer Bertha Mae, and announces that he’s hired a famous guitar player, Guitar Sam, for a one night only gig in order to save the club. Into town drifts Sonny Blake, a young man with nothing to his name but big dreams and the guitar case in his hand. Rejected by Tyrone when he applies to play at the Honeydripper, he is intercepted by the corrupt local Sheriff, arrested for vagrancy and rented out as an unpaid cotton picker to the highest bidder. But when Tyrone’s ace-in-the-hole fails to materialize at the train station, his desperation leads him back to Sonny and the strange, wire-dangling object in his guitar case. The Honeydripper Lounge is all set to play its part in rock n’ roll history. Newsletter for w/e 2/7/08

If you want to have anything included that will be of interest to our readers, send it to mleibov@filmnorth.org. If possible please try and send the information several weeks in advance.

If you go to www.SalemFilmFest.com, you’ll find descriptions of some of the upcoming festivals films, and the full schedule should be up in the next few days. Basically, instead of bringing in one new movie to play all week, we’ll be bringing in 20+ movies to play once each, — a bonanza for film-lovers.

We’re also very happy to report that several of the filmmakers will be making the trip to Salem to attend the festival and participate in Q & A sessions after their screenings, so it’s turning into a great, rich, fun event. Reserve February 28- March 6 for the festivities.

For more information and applications on the Five Minute Film Festival for students you can go to filmnorth.org.

The MassBay Film Project & Festivals states that the first film of every month is
free to the public (though “thank you” donations as-you-exit are gratefully accepted) as part of our “Free First Film” series. This starts this week, and will run for at least a year, no matter where we showcase our wares. Starting this Thursday, February 7, we will bring our line-up of independent and foreign films to The Gloucester Stage Company on East Main Street in Gloucester.

Looking ahead to March, our First Free Film at Gloucester Stage is the acclaimed dramatic comedy, Arranged on Thursday, March 6. On March 8, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Rockport, we’re very jazzed to present a special screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush. The screening is special because to accompany this silent classic, we’re bringing renowned pianist and composer Richard Hughes in to play a score for the film. It’s going to be very cool

New York Television Festival

The New York Television Festival (NYTVF) is proud to announce that it is now accepting submissions to the fourth annual Independent Pilot Competition (IPC). The NYTVF, held each fall in Midtown Manhattan, is the first-ever independent television showcase, giving independent television producers and creators the opportunity to present their work directly to executives at broadcast networks, cable networks, and online content providers. The 2008 NYTVF will be held in September, on dates to be announced soon.

Starting this year, the IPC will accept pilot entries between 5 minutes and 22 minutes in length for consideration to the IPC. The NYTVF recognizes that television is evolving into new and emerging platforms, and the opportunities for our artists to create television content for new media outlets have never been greater. We feel it is a service to our pilot-makers to give them the flexibility to create pilots tailored to these platforms while still allowing them to present ideas for more conventional television developers.

Official Selections to the 2007 Independent Pilot Competition were screened directly for development execs, agents, and producers throughout the TV industry. Additionally, all pilots were broadcast online on MSN Video for viewers all over the country to enjoy, maximizing the exposure our artists received for their work. Our top entrants have the opportunity to work with some of the biggest producers in TV, such as Tom Fontana, Michael Davies, Mitchell Hurwitz, and Phil Rosenthal. They also have a chance to win cash prizes, development deals, and recognition unmatched anywhere else.

The NYTVF accepts pilots of all categories and genres, both scripted and unscripted. For more information, please visit www.nytvf.com.
