Newsletter for w/e 3/27/08

Verizon DSL had a problem in the morning causing me to lose a lot of time.  There might be some update on Saturday, but can’t promise anything.  There still was a lot happening.

If anyone has any information that they want to share with members, let me know so I can include it in the next newsletter.

Just want to remind everyone that the last day for students to enter the Five Minute Film Festival is March 31, 2008. More information can be obtained at the filmnorth.org webswite.

We will be having free screenings of vintage films and shows. They will be shown monthly with the first screening to take place Saturday, April 12 at 1:30 PM. They will be at the Beverly Public Library located at 32 Essex Street, Beverly, Ma. The shows are from the collection of Jim Jalbert, a film memorabilia collector. He hasn’t seen some of these for over 20 years.

The planning for the next international film festival has already started. *Date & Time: Thursday, April 3 @ 7:00pm

*Film: THE VIOLIN - Don Plutarco, his son Genaro and his grandson Lucio live a double life: on one hand they are musicians and humble farmers, on the other they support the campesina peasant guerilla movement’s armed efforts against the oppressive government. When the military seizes the village, the rebels flee to the sierra hills, forced to leave behind their stock of ammunition. While the guerillas organize a counter-attack, old Plutarco executes his own plan. He plays up his appearance as a harmless violin player, in order to get into the village and recover the ammunition hidden his corn field. His violin playing charms the army captain, who orders Plutarco to come back daily. Arms and music play a tenuous game of cat-and-mouse which ultimately results in painful betrayal. The Violin is the most decorated film in Mexican film history. [MOVIE WEBSITE] [Drama, 98 minutes]

A patch released last week to fix security vulnerabilities in Excel 2003 causes the spreadsheet to calculate incorrectly if the patched version of Excel is linked to a real-time data source through macros built with Visual Basic for Applications.

There is another critical vulnerability that affects users of Word r.unning on Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 SP1. Until a fix is available, Microsoft said users and IT administrators could disable Jet or block .mdb files at the gateway.

*Film: OPERATION HOMECOMING: WRITING THE WARTIME EXPERIENCE - This unique, Oscar-nominated documentary explores the firsthand the accounts of American troops through their written words, and offers a profound window into the human side of the war being fought in Iraq. The film evolved out of a National Endowment for the Arts project that gathered the writing of soldiers and their families who have participated in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Interviews and dramatic readings by such actors as Robert Duvall, Josh Lucas, Beau Bridges, Blair Underwood, Justin Kirk, Aaron Eckhart, Chris Gorham and John Krasinski, transform selections from this collection of writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and women who are serving in America’s armed forces. At the same time the film provides depth and context to these experiences through a broader look at the universal themes of war literature. The writing in Operation Homecoming covers the full spectrum – poetry, fiction, memoir, letters, journals, and essays. The stories recounted here are sad, funny, violent, and uplifting. Yet each one displays an honesty and intensity that is rarely seen in explorations of the war. Wed, 03/12/2008 - 13:49 — Interrobang Fil…

The Des Moines Arts Festival has announced the addition of the Interrobang Film Festival to its 2008 roster of arts-centric activities. Film submissions for the inaugural Interrobang Film Festival are now being accepted, due postmarked by May 31, 2008, and public screenings of accepted films will take place at the Des Moines Arts Festival on June 27-29, 2008, in downtown Des Moines’ Western Gateway Park.

“We are very excited to debut the Interrobang Film Festival in concert with the 2008 Des Moines Arts Festival,” Stephen King, Des Moines Arts Festival Executive Director said. “Our goal is to support the growing film-making community, while also adding to the art forms celebrated at the Arts Festival, an event that has already established itself nationally as a premiere arts destination.”

The Des Moines Arts Festival has secured the leadership of Sam Tuomi to produce the Interrobang Film Festival. As the current Des Moines producer of the 48 Hour Film Project, Tuomi aims to continue the expansion of the Des Moines independent film scene. Focusing mainly on film production, Tuomi incorporates photography, transfer print making and digital creations into his continually expanding palette. Film works include two 16 mm shorts entitled Raw Energy and B.J. Dick, as well as the independent feature Tasty. Tuomi has also produced several short films for art installations and as part of national film contests such as the National Film Challenge.

The Interrobang Film Festival will combine a traditional film production competition with a public screening during the weekend of the Des Moines Arts Festival. Interrobang’s vision is to celebrate creativity, while promoting the widest array of film types possible.

Categories for entry in the competition include Feature, Mids, Shorts, Short Shorts, Documentary and Free Form. Entrants will have the option of applying in either the Professional or Student Competition. Feature films must be from 60-140 minutes in length, mids are films between 15-60 minutes long, shorts must not exceed 15 minutes in length, and short shorts can not exceed one minute in length. There is no application fee to submit films in the debut event.

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of local jurors, and awards will be determined based on a Best of category system. Cash prizes will be awarded in various categories. Jurors will also award a Best Iowa Filmmaker Award to a production company or department that is a resident of the state of Iowa. Guests will have the opportunity to view accepted films at various times throughout the three days of the Des Moines Arts Festival.

All entrants must submit films on DVD or MiniDV, along with an official entry form. Submissions are due postmarked by May 31, 2008, and must be received by June 5, 2008. Download rules and regulations, and official entry forms at www.interrobangfilm.org.

The Des Moines Arts Festival is presented by The Des Moines Register, founded by the Des Moines Art Center and produced by Downtown Events Group. The Festival is sponsored by Prairie Meadows, Principal Financial Group, GuideOne Insurance, Meredith Corporation, Mercy Medical Center and U.S. Cellular.

MARCH 20

*Date & Time: Thursday, March 20 @ 7:00pm

*Film: HONEYDRIPPER - Iconoclastic filmmaker John Sayles, in his 16th feature film, continues his extraordinary examination of the complexities and shifting identities of American sub-cultures in the new film “Honeydripper.” With his usual understated intelligence, Sayles uses the rhythms of the citizens of Harmony, Alabama to immerse the audience into the world of the Jim Crow south. It’s a fable about the birth of rock n’ roll-a quintessentially American subject, but with a fidelity to time and temperament that is unusual in an American director. It’s 1950 and it’s a make-or-break weekend for Tyrone Purvis (Danny Glover), the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge. Deep in debt, Tyrone is desperate to bring back the crowds that used to come to his place. He decides to lay off his long-time blues singer Bertha Mae, and announces that he’s hired a famous guitar player, Guitar Sam, for a one night only gig in order to save the club. Into town drifts Sonny Blake, a young man with nothing to his name but big dreams and the guitar case in his hand. Rejected by Tyrone when he applies to play at the Honeydripper, he is intercepted by the corrupt local Sheriff, arrested for vagrancy and rented out as an unpaid cotton picker to the highest bidder. But when Tyrone’s ace-in-the-hole fails to materialize at the train station, his desperation leads him back to Sonny and the strange, wire-dangling object in his guitar case. The Honeydripper Lounge is all set to play its part in rock n’ roll history. The LEF Foundation is pleased to announce its support of a new film screening series, Facing Realities: Dialogues in Boston Documentary Filmmaking. Having recognized and supported documentary filmmaking in Boston for many years, this film series is part of a larger effort to highlight the history and deepen the understanding of Boston’s remarkable documentary tradition, which continues today.

The screening series begins on Saturday, March 22 at 12:30 pm at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The intent of the series is to juxtapose important documentary films from different generations of Boston based filmmakers, thereby revealing the connections between the earliest innovators and filmmakers today. For the first screening, curator Peter Dowd has selected Forest of Bliss by Robert Gardner and The Hawk Takes One Chick, by Jane Gillooly.

A discussion between the filmmakers will be facilitated by film scholar Scott MacDonald, author of numerous books about experimental film, including the series A Critical Cinema: Interviews with Independent Filmmakers. For complete details on this initial screening, please reference the attached flyer or visit the project’s website at www.filmandreality.org.

This screening series is part of a multi-platform effort, Film & Reality: Boston Documentary, being sponsored by LEF to shed new light on Boston’s documentary filmmaking tradition and its significant, yet under-recognized, contribution to the history of cinema and modern moving image culture. Through film screenings, critical writing and discourse, and filmmaking itself, this project highlights the work of area filmmakers who continue to explore the risk and friction that occur when film meets reality, and who produce highly original work that wrestles with the depiction of “truth” in our complex world.

Many kudos to the people, businesses and agencies of Salem who helped to make the Salem Film Fest a success. This goes from the mayor on down. If you hate politicians you might say from the mayor on up. I wish all cities and towns could show such cooperation. Could Rinus in his tux be the highlight of the festival?

“Buddha’s Lost Children” Fan Favorite; “Beyond the Call” wins Jury Award at Salem Film Fest

Salem, Monday, March 3, 2008. The first annual Salem Film Fest announced awards for three documentary films that screened this weekend at CinemaSalem. The audience at Salem Film Fest selected a film from the Netherlands - Marc Verkerk’s “Buddha’s Lost Children” - as the Audience Favorite of this year’s festival. The festival organizers awarded Adrian Belic’s “Beyond the Call” a Jury Award and gave runner-up recognition to Jennifer Baichwal’s “Manufactured Landscapes,” a film from Canada.

The kickoff year of the festival has been a huge success, with audiences growing each day and far surpassing organizer’s predictions. Several films have played before packed houses and the reaction from audience members and participating filmmakers has been overwhelmingly positive. Many films have been followed by lively discussions with their makers who spent the weekend in the city interacting with audience members at the theatre and at other events organized by the festival around the city. The festival continues with out-of-competition screenings at CinemaSalem weeknights through Thursday.

“Buddha’s Lost Children” is a breathtaking true story of compassion and tough love about an unorthodox Buddhist monk, who devotes himself to the welfare of young children in the borderlands of Thailand’s Golden Triangle. With stunning cinematography, great storylines and a message of inspiration and hope, “Buddha’s Lost Children” wowed the audience during its screening.

Producer Ton Okkerse from the Netherlands, who visited Salem Film Fest this weekend, spoke afterwards about the grassroots approach of monk Khru Bah and his small roving monastic community, and informed the audience about the challenges director Marc Verkerk faced while making the movie. Okkerse also gave an update on the orphans depicted in the movie, making the case that the work of one Thai kick boxer turned monk, Khru Bah, a Rambo in robes in Thailand’s Golden Triangle, gives so many young Thai orphans a life-changing opportunity.

Jury Award winner “Beyond the Call” is an Indiana Jones meets Mother Teresa adventure, in which three middle-aged men, former US soldiers and modern-day knights, travel the world delivering life saving humanitarian aid directly into the hands of civilians and doctors in some of the most dangerous yet beautiful places on Earth, the front lines of war. Director Adrian Belic manages to surprise and inspire, and the Salem Film Fest jury thought that “Beyond the Call” definitely makes viewers see the world differently.

Jury Award runner-up is “Manufactured Landscapes” - a stunning documentary from Canada by award winning director Jennifer Baichwal. The film focuses on photographer Edward Burtynsky who is internationally acclaimed for his large-scale photographs of nature transformed by industry. Baichwal follows Burtynsky to China, as he captures the effects of the country‘s massive industrial revolution. The remarkable film is stunning in its photography and makes the audience reflect on our impact on the planet.

All three recognized films were screened during Awards Night on Wednesday, March 5th at CinemaSalem. “Manufactured Landscapes” will screen at 4.30pm, “Buddha’s Lost Children” at 6:30pm and “Beyond the Call” at 8.30pm.

*Film: THE GOLD RUSH - Comic legend Charlie Chaplin’s famous character The Little Tramp travels to Alaska to stake his claim in the Alaska Gold Rush. After bad weather strands him in a remote cabin with a prospector and an escaped fugitive, the Tramp eventually finds himself in a gold rush town where he ultimately decides to give up prospecting. After taking a job looking after another prospector’s cabin, he falls in love with a lonely saloon girl whom he mistakenly thinks has fallen in love with him. He soon finds himself waylaid by the prospector he met earlier, who has developed amnesia and needs the Tramp to help him find his claim.

Gifted pianist Richard Hughes brings this classic to vivid life by playing a live piano score to accompany the feature. Hughes began playing the piano at the age of seven, beginning with classical music and later boogie-woogie, ragtime and pop. For the past ten years, he has compiled many silent movie scores taken from authentic ‘mood music’ that was played during the 1920’s. This music enhanced the movie scenes by making them “come alive” in the third dimension. An event not to be missed! [Comedy, 82 minutes]

Film Competition for Novel Film Trailers

Reply to: see below
Date: 2008-03-06, 8:24AM EST

The goal in creating this annual competition is to produce a series of high quality, independent short films that will not only stand on their own as important and provocative works, but also bring worthwhile and socially relevant literary novels to the attention of a larger audience.

We are looking for filmmakers to creatively and dramatically interpret any one or more of a large number of diverse scenes within YEAR OF THE RHINOCEROS, the novel chosen for this first competition. YEAR OF THE RHINOCEROS is a story of those who defied the corporate invasion of Washington in the 1980’s.

We are searching for filmmakers truly interested in making a mark in the business by virtue of their desire to make a statement. We are hungry for great acting, mood, and overall dramatic presentation. We are also looking to comprise a list of filmmakers available for future projects initiated by publishing companies desirous of making intelligent use of the film medium to promote books.

Entry form and guidelines, novel synopses, etc., can be found at http://www.novelfilmtrailer.com .
