A story of the friendship among three women from Yugoslavia. Reza left Belgrade more than 30 years ago to seek a new life in Zurich. Now in her fifties, she has completely detached herself from the past. She owns a cafeteria and maintains an orderly, joyless existence. Mila, a waitress there, is a good-humored Croatian woman who also emigrated decades ago. But unlike Reza, Mila dreams of returning to a house on the Croatian coast. Both of them receive a jolt when Ana, a young, itinerant woman who has fled Sarajevo, breezes into the cafeteria looking for work. Reza hires her but is annoyed by Ana’s impulsive and spirited efforts to inject life into the cafeteria. But the acrimony dissipates as Ana begins to thaw Reza’s chill.

Written and directed by Andrea Staka; Starring Mirjana Karanovic, Marija Škarièiæ and Ljubica Joviæ

Newsletter for w/e 4/17/08

If anyone has any information that they want to share with members, let me know so I can include it in the next newsletter.

For those who didn’t attend the classic films screening at the Beverly Public Library, you missed a “very good” event. That was the consensus of all the forms we received from the audience. The next one will be on May 10. Come a little early to get a parking space. The lot fills up quickly.

I was impressed with the quality of the entries we received for the Five Minute Film Festival.

While I have always tried to do what the members/public wanted for the organization, it does not appear that many care. For that reason, I will concentrate my efforts on my own projects and those of others who truly are interested in the filmmaking industry. Depending on how busy I am could relate to the consistency and content of future blogs. Perhaps, I might only post local events and activities on a relatively consistent basis.

*Film: SHARKWATER - For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world’s shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth’s history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed. Stewart’s remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world’s sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind. Welcome to Radiant City, an entertaining and startling new film on 21st century suburbanites. Gary Burns, Canada’s king of surreal comedy, joins journalist Jim Brown on an outing to the ‘burbs. Venturing into territory both familiar and foreign, they turn the documentary genre inside out, crafting a vivid account of life in The Late Suburban Age.
Sprawl is eating the planet. Across the continent the landscape is being levelled - blasted clean of distinctive features and overlaid with zombie monoculture. Politicians call it growth. Developers call it business. The Moss family call it home. A chorus of cultural prophets provide insight on the spectacle. James Howard Kunstler, author of The Geography of Nowhere, rails against the brutalizing aesthetic of strip malls. Philosopher Joseph Heath fears the soul-eating burbs but admits they offer good value for money. Last week, Michigan passed a 40% tax credit. Movie studio backers in this state want a tax credit to build a studio here. Hmm. Michigan is north. Perhaps Film North should think about relocating.

*Film: THE UNFORESEEN - An ambitious west Texas farm boy with grandiose plans tires of living at the mercy of nature and sets out to find a life with more control. He heads to Austin where he becomes a real estate developer and skillfully capitalizes on the growth of this 1970s boomtown. At the peak of his powers, he transforms 4,000 acres of pristine Hill Country into one of the state’s largest and fastest selling subdivisions. When the development threatens a local treasure, a fragile limestone aquifer and a naturally spring-fed swimming hole, the community fights back. In the conflict that ensues, we see in miniature a struggle that today plays out in communities across the country. Featuring interviews with Robert Redford, Willie Nelson, the iconic Texas Governor Ann Richards, environmentalist Wendell Berry and many others, The Unforeseen is a powerful meditation on the American Dream – on the destruction of the natural world as it falls victim to the cannibalizing forces of unchecked development. It is an intricate tale of personal hopes, victories and failures; and of debates over land, water and the public good [Documentary, 94 minutes]

APRIL 3
*Name: Robert Newton
*Event Title: The Boston North Shore Film Festival Spring ‘08 Independent Film Series
*Date & Time: Thursday, April 3 @ 7:00pm
*Film: THE VIOLIN - Don Plutarco, his son Genaro and his grandson Lucio live a double life: on one hand they are musicians and humble farmers, on the other they support the campesina peasant guerilla movement’s armed efforts against the oppressive government. When the military seizes the village, the rebels flee to the sierra hills, forced to leave behind their stock of ammunition. While the guerillas organize a counter-attack, old Plutarco executes his own plan. He plays up his appearance as a harmless violin player, in order to get into the village and recover the ammunition hidden his corn field. His violin playing charms the army captain, who orders Plutarco to come back daily. Arms and music play a tenuous game of cat-and-mouse which ultimately results in painful betrayal. The Violin is the most decorated film in Mexican film history. [Drama, 98 minutes]

NH BASED STAGEWRIGHT FILMS
TO SHOOT FILM AT GRANITE MEDIA CENTER
LA BASED FUNNY BOY FILMS TO DISTRIBUTE

Stagewright Films, the newly formed New Hampshire-based production company has just finalized casting on the first of a series of feature films melding the two worlds of live theatre and film. Stagewright has just signed Los Angeles actors Matthew Jaeger and Robert Mammana to star in David J. Mauriello’s two man story JUST SAY LOVE. Granite Media Center in Tilton, NH has been chosen as the production facility and JUST SAY LOVE will be the first major project to be produced at the new production facility. Both Stagewright and GMC are planning to make the most out of the state-of-the-art facility. Stagewright has also signed with Funny Boy Films of Los Angeles as distributor and production administration.

A collaboration between three-time Emmy Award winning Producer/Director Bill Humphreys and multiple award winning Executive Producer/Writer David J. Mauriello, Stagewright Films was created to blend the worlds of live theatre and motion pictures on screen. Humphreys states that “…through the use of theatrical staging techniques we will set time and locale in an abstract way to support the theme and personality of the stories we tell which will allow us to focus on the content and the performance. With the vast storehouse of well-written stage plays which, for many reasons, may never be produced, Stagewright was formed to offer a venue where quality work can reach a larger audience.”

JUST SAY LOVE is the first in the series of projects to be produced by Stagewright Films. Mauriello originally wrote the script for stage. Humphreys has crafted the screen adaptation and will serve as director. The stage version of JUST SAY LOVE premiered at the Player’s Ring in Portsmouth, NH and was recently nominated in the Best New Play category by the Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards and the Best Original Script category by the Spotlight on the Arts awards. Over the past year it has been mounted in both Boston and Chicago. There are plans for several other productions of JUST SAY LOVE in the coming months at venues across the country.

Casting recently took place in Los Angeles and Mammana and Jaeger were booked within days. Recent regional auditions brought some exceptional local talent to the forefront as well. They are being kept on tap for future projects.

The crew has been assembled from all over the U.S. and the company received interest from outside the States including the U.K., Spain and as far away as Tel Aviv. Other members of the Stagewright production team include: Kirkland Tibbels as Executive Producer; Bradshaw Branch as Co-Producer/Press Relations and Tyler Heon as Co-Producer/Production Manager. Nate Beaman of Burlington, VT will serve as Director of Photography.

Shooting is scheduled to begin May 5 and run through the end of the month with all principal photography being done entirely on site at the GMCNH studio. Once completed the film will be distributed by Funny Boy Films, out of LA whose most recent hit is the film version of Broadway’s NAKED BOYS SINGING.
