Film North, Inc. Newsletter for w/e 9/25/08
If anyone has any information that they want to share with members, let me know so I can include it in the next blog. If possible please try and send the information several weeks in advance.
The annual membership meeting will take place October 29 at CinemaSalem’s café. Paul has been gracious in allowing us to use it. The meeting will start at 6:45 PM, but people can get there a little earlier to network. This meeting is for paid members, past paid members and all who would like to know more about us and maybe network before or after the meeting. I expect the official meeting to be brief. We will take up potential change in membership dues (we will take up the potential of lowering the membership dues for some of the categories) and future activities for the year. We still need a Clerk and others willing to volunteer their time for the organization.
Remember you can go to the filmnorth.org site to keep updated on news related to the film/video community.

NEW COMMUNITY CINEMA TO SHOW OVER 60 FILMS IN 33 DAYS
GLOUCESTER, MA [September 22, 2008] – The newly formed Cape Ann Community Cinema (CACC) in Gloucester today announced its full opening month line-up of over 60 films, which will be shown at the CACC’s space at the Gloucester Stage Company at 267 East Main Street. Presented in marathon fashion from October 1 to November 2 (as The First Hopefully Annual Boston North Shore Film Festival), the daily parade of local, independent and foreign films is just the beginning of a season that will bring a variety of new films to Cape Ann and the North Shore 4-5 days a week through the end of the CACC’s season in May 2009.
The opening night film, “Row Hard No Excuses,” is about two men who raced across the Atlantic in a boat they built in Essex. One of the men, Tom Mailhot, will be on hand to talk with the audience, as will producer Bill Wolbach. Before the film, the local choral group Three Sheets To The Wind will perform a selection of (family-friendly) sea shanties.
In addition to familiar theatrical fare like the Oscar-winning Holocaust drama “The Counterfeiters,” the thriller “Transsiberian” and the acclaimed documentary “Man On Wire,” the CACC will sample other diverse fare in October, some of which will be free to the public.
FOUR FREE FILMS AND AUTHOR APPEARANCES
For four Wednesdays in October, the CACC will host one author a week, starting on October 8 with Beth Harrington’s rare treat “The Blinking Madonna & Other Miracles.” The film, shot in Boston, will be presented by film critic Paul Sherman, who will be discussing and signing his new book, “Big Screen Boston.” On October 15, critic MaryAnn Johanson (aka “The Flick Filosopher”) will be on hand to share Rob Reiner’s modern classic, “The Princess Bride,” as she is the author of the book “The Totally Geeky Guide To The Princess Bride.” October 22 brings Ernst Lubitsch’s 1940 classic, “The Shop Around The Corner” (which was remade as “You’ve Got Mail” in 1998) and Variety film critic Daniel M. Kimmel, talking about his new book “I’ll Have What She’s Having,” which goes behind the scenes of Hollywood’s greatest romantic comedies. October 29 has Clive Young sharing a hand picked selection of “fan films” (fan-produced tributes to a favorite film like “Star Wars”) and talking about his new book “Homemade Hollywood,” which traces the surprisingly long history of the genre.
In addition to the free Wednesday events, the CACC will present five free movies at 5:00pm every Thursday – the thriller “Ben X” (Oct. 2), the drama “Days And Clouds” (Oct. 9), the coming-of-age tale “The Grocer’s Son” (Oct. 16), the police drama “Noise” (Oct. 23) and the unconventional love story “XXY” (Oct. 30).
