Zingerplatz Pictures Presents “Bashful Artists

Documentary film studio exhibits work of local artists as part of Salem Arts Association’s Open Studios

Zingerplatz Pictures announces an upcoming art exhibit featuring the paintings of Paul S. Cultrera, Sr. and the photography of Jeffrey Dykes as part of Salem Open Studios, an annual event organized by the Salem Art Association. Despite the fact that both men have spent much their lives creating art, this is the first dedicated exhibit of photographs by Dykes and only the third for the 94 year-old Cultrera. Given these artists’s reluctant approach to self-promotion, the exhibit has been organized under the theme of “Bashful Artists.” In the spirit of the theme, Saturday’s exhibit will also include snippets of video work from reticent documentary filmmaker Joe Cultrera and original note cards designed by Mary Beth Bainbridge – Salem’s Undercover Patron Saint of the Arts. Much blushing and fidgeting is to be expected from all.

The exhibition will be free and open to the public on Saturday, November 22 (10am – 6pm). Paul Cultrera’s paintings and Jeffrey Dyke’s photographs can also be viewed by appointment through the end of December.

Paul Cultrera has been a resident of Salem’s Italian neighborhood since 1916 and has been painting for over eighty years. He is well known within the Italian community, having been an active member in social and religious circles such as the Christopher Columbus Society and the former St Mary’s Italian Church. His paintings are a familiar sight in many a North Shore home and one of them is part of the permanent collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. Last year’s Salem Open Studios exhibit at Zingerplatz provided Cultrera his first solo art show – a chance to exhibit works previously hidden in closets and under couches. This exhibit was an outstanding success and was followed by another solo show at CinemaSalem. This year’s open studio exhibit will feature new works produced by Cultrera over the past year, other works never before displayed as well as paintings pried from Cultrera’s private collection and closets. Note card reproductions of some of his works will also be available for purchase.

Jeffrey Dykes has been referred to by some as the unofficial social mayor of Salem. With camera over his shoulder, Jeffrey is a familiar and friendly presence in Salem’s downtown but few have seen what comes out of that camera. While he has spent the last decade employed in the photography department at the Peabody Essex Museum’s Phillips Library, he has also focused on the creation of an impressive and impressionistic body of photography of his own origination. Much of his work is influenced by his life-long connection to the bodies of water he has always lived near. As he says in his artists’ statement “Boats have played a large part of my being. As a child I hung my head over the bow, watching the rhythm of the hull as it danced above and below the water line, followed by the trail of my tiller as it calmed the wake of my uncle’s boat…I believe in the spirit of the human working with nature and where there is respect of each, there is a one.”

Salem Arts Association’s Salem Open Studios on November 22 is taking place at locations throughout the city including Old Town Hall and various artists’ studios. All exhibits are free and open to the public. For information and a map of locations, please visit the Salem Open Studios website at: http://saa.onefireplace.org/
