Technology

Researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, have discovered a way, using nanoparticles, to store 2000 DVDs worth of information on a single standard DVD. They discs will be commercially available within 5 to 10 years.

A review of the new Apple 17 inch MacBook Pro shows that Apple is maintaining their quality. It has two GPUs. One is for less power intensive work such as word processing where you need to maintain your battery life and the other is for more power intensive work such as video editing. In that is has a sealed battery, you will need an external power source for heavier use after 5 hours. It doesn’t have an HDMI port, but does have a Mini Display Port.

The whole world’s a garden in ‘Fireflies’ at The Players’ Ring
WORLD PREMIERE OF DAVID J. MAURIELLO’S UPLIFTING FAMILY DRAMA RUNS THROUGH MAY 31

PORTSMOUTH, NH- Theatre-in-the-round seating returns to The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth for the world premiere of David J. Mauriello’s ‘Fireflies.’ Jean Wadman of Rye and David Allan Burke of Portsmouth star as the mother and son who rekindle their lost bond in this uplifting family drama.
The audience will surround the stage on all sides, following director Craig Fogg’s discovery of schematics from the Ring’s early years when founder F. Gary Newton produced some shows in that style, nearly two decades ago.
“In-the-round seating connects with the theme of the play,” Fogg says, “as the son begins to see beyond a given situation to the unlimited possibilities that a circle represents.” Much of the play takes place in the garden at the family homestead, after the son comes home from his posh Boston townhouse and finds his mother ill.
Both Wadman and Burke are making their Players’ Ring debuts. Wadman is a member of the Senior Moments acting troupe, where her favorite role was the Cowardly Lion in ‘The Oz Nursing Home.’ Burke studied20at the Guthrie Theater in the Twin Cities. Both are members of Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
‘Fireflies’ contrasts the lifestyle of a successful businessman and his partner with that of his aging mother. “Expect to be regaled with laughter,” says playwright Mauriello, “but also with the heart-tugging emotions that the search for truth can bring.”
The cast also includes Chuck Galle (Ray), who appeared at the Ring last summer in ‘Evening Broadcasts,’ Constance Witman (Angie), nominated for two Spotlight awards for her roles in ‘Rhubarb and Rose Honey’ and ‘Proof,’ Kari Cretalla Nickou (Connie), recently seen at the Firehouse Center in Newburyport, MA, and James Ryan Steel (Kevin), a New Hampshire native making his debut at the Ring.
Tickets to ‘Fireflies’ are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and member discounts will apply. The play runs from May 8 through 31, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 7:00 PM.
The Players’ Ring is located on Prescott Park at 105 Marcy Street, across from Strawbery Banke. For reservations, call (603) 436-8123. Details on ‘Fireflies’ and other upcoming shows are available at www.playersring.org.

The Center for Independent Documentary (CID) and the Kopkind Center are sponsoring this week-long retreat limited to nine filmmakers along with special invited guests at Treefrog Farm in Guilford Vermont from August 2nd (Sunday is the travel day) to Sunday, August 9th. The theme for the morning seminars is:

Brainstorming to a new future in independent filmmaking
It’s the best of times- it’s the worst of times. It’s certainly a time of profound change. Join us to brainstorm about new ways to think and operate in this new landscape and recharge your creative battery with some of Kopkind/CID’s special brand of “radical relaxation”! It is the summer of the BIG THINK and we aim to explore together not just how to survive as an independent filmmaker, but how to thrive.

The costs for filmmakers participating for the week is $295 per person.

The cost includes: a single Cabin room for 7 nights (shared bathroom facilities), clean linens and towels, continental breakfasts, buffet lunches, and sit-down family style dinners, afternoon excursions to swimming holes and country outings, pick-up from Bus or Train station in Brattleboro Vermont, and programmed Morning Seminars.

Applying for the retreat week is very easy. Just write a letter to Susi Walsh and John Scagliotti explaining where you are from, what media work you have done and how you could contribute to the theme of our seminars. Also describe briefly the 20-minute visual media you would be bringing to the “film slams.” Send the letter to John Scagliotti (stonewal@sover.net) . We expect to have more applicants than spaces so please respond as soon as possible. We’ll be putting the group together from your letters around June 8th, which is around the time the deposits are due. We do this so that you can make your summer plans.

Registration and Non-refundable deposits ($50) are due by June 10th and full payment is due by July 11th. Deposit and payment checks should be made out to The Center for Independent Documentary and mailed to John Scagliotti, Administrator, Kopkind, 158 Kopkind Rd, Guilford, VT. 05301. Slots are limited, so we recommend an early registration and deposit.

From Christopher Gilbert of Lamp Post Media:

1. On Friday night this week - May 8 - My half hour HD Film on 200 years of Boston’s Historic Park Street Church will have its premiere at Park Street in their newly renovated “Welcome Center” with its own cinema space. For Bostonians who’d like to be there: it will be shown at 6:45pm and 8:00pm. The event is free, a part of the church’s bicentennial celebrations. It will be released that night to purchase on DVD. Park Street Church is one of the stops for history buffs and tourists along Boston’s Freedom Trail, and the film will become part of the Freedom Trail experience.

2. In the past month I have gathered together a group of recent college graduates with the skills and talent to create television news programming, and we have formed a local news entity we call NIDEO = news video, and produced stories under the title “This City News”. So far we have produced two half hour programs for local access television station, BevCam, and the individual stories we have covered can be found on youtube at LONIDEO = local news video. http://www.youtube.com/user/LONIDEO

Our goal is to restore to local news coverage the kind of excellence in journalism and use of the technology that has been siphoned away into national network coverage - which in this country (US) has become mere melodrama but of the highest technical production values. We believe we can be a buffer to the decline in print media, (a development dangerous to democracy) and restore dignity and pride of place in a local region. We are considering supplying Cinemas with local newsreel footage, and hope to become a freelance team that major media outlets will use to gather their webstream video stories in our region.

We are also developing a website as our news portal www.nideo.net - but it will be some months in development before we are online.

My documentary project “Beyond Empires” and another - “Of Grace and Grit” still require funding to get off the ground - so we continue to take opportunities where they are found to advance those projects.
