Jodi Purdy-Quinlan of South Shore Casting Seeking Actors for “The Fixer” TV Pilot
I am pleased to be casting principal and day player roles, as well as extras for the “The Fixer” a TV Pilot (and series) shooting in the Boston area.
Please send your headshot and resume to TheFixerCasting@gmail.com and a hard copy to our mailing address at SSC, 150 Middle Street, Weymouth, MA 02189. Auditions will be held our Studio at SSC, Hanover Mall, 1775 Washington St., Suite 401, Hanover, MA 02339 at dates to be announced.
Here is a breakdown of some of the characters to be cast:
BATHUS:
Bathus is a serious bad-ass. After failing Selection for entry into the Fixer Service, Bathus became a Specter, an elite security force of vampires that provides protection to vampire communities across the world. Absolute masters of infiltration and camouflage, Specters on active duty say almost nothing except to each other and are absolutely lethal. Able to appear as if by magic, their skills are only just below those of a Fixer.
Bathus himself is in supreme physical condition and harbors serious resentment about failing Selection. This hatred has fueled his dislike of Lawson.
ARTHUR:
A gnarled British ex-Fixer who works as the butler/security detail at the Council building in Boston, Arthur has seen it all. Twice. Still fit and able to kick-ass if needed, Arthur much prefers to spend his time working on a peculiar alcoholic blood drink that he lovingly refers to as “boomshanka.” The recipe tends to change quite a bit. Arthur’s other favorite item is his Mossberg shotgun, which he will carry into combat when called upon.
A good deal older than Lawson, Arthur still carries a lot of bad memories around, including one particular case that still haunts him to this day, which will be explored in a future Lawson novel.
STEPHANE:
Rather slovenly, Stephane has gotten fat off the finer things in life, which he has acquired through a variety of illegal means. Somewhat older than Lawson, Stephane is stocky and rather greasy to look at. He flaunts his nouveau riche status, but underneath the pomp, he’s still very much the street urchin.
MARTINA:
The armorer assigned to the Boston station, Martina is a 20-something who can appear both bookish and drop-dead gorgeous. Behind her glasses, Martina is itching to get into combat. She wants nothing more than to become a Fixer, but has settled for being the resident gun genius, because her destiny didn’t aim her into the Fixer service. Martina has many sides, including a secret desire to be a pop singer. But Martina makes no secret of the fact that she pines for Lawson.
Martina is in excellent shape and keeps expanding her abilities as she constantly tries to prove that she is every bit the equal of any operational Fixer in the Service today.
NILES:
Niles is Lawson’s 30-something Control. A recent transplant to Boston, Niles made his first appearance in the 3rd Lawson novel, The Destructor. Lawson’s opinion of their first meeting was that Niles was a poor excuse for a Control but over the course of the novel, that opinion changed dramatically. In Lawson’s estimation, Niles is the best Control he’s ever had.
Niles is thin and tall, but very strong thanks to his devotion to Pilates. While Niles tends to keep his social life out of conversation, he is gay and loves Boston’s nightclub scene. Lawson has no idea if Niles has anyone serious in his life. Niles’ attitude is very much summed up by the idea that when it’s time to work, it’s time to work. While his status as a Control means he doesn’t see much action, he has fought by Lawson’s side, thereby earning him even more respect from the Fixer.

Misc. Odds and Ends

From Chuck Slavin:
CORRECTION: First and foremost let me apologize for my spelling errors. Rep. D’Amico was originally backed by the AFL-CIO. I mistakenly thought it carried over. He ran unopposed in the last election cycle for his first reelection campaign, thus he did not seek or need endorsement money or volunteers. His next election however there will be opposition and he may be knocking on the union doors again. With all of the press D’Amico has had concerning his opposition to MA film credits, I would have liked to have seen a more active response from the union that it directly affects, as well as the unions it indirectly affects. That is why I reached out to you. I speak only for myself and do not represent the Union in any way in this urge for action. I will certainly be asking for your help in the future when a challenger arises to take Rep. D’Amico’s seat! Those of you who took the time to write our letter made that statement! Mr. D’Amico has in the past, and is presently receiving union backing as seen by his OCPF report. I want to make sure that our union and affiliated unions are indeed aware of his stance on the film industry and how it directly and/or indirectly affects all related unions and its membership. Since SAG and AFTRA, of which I am a dues paying member, is associated with the AFL-CIO, I felt that it was important for this leadership to know how I, and how my fellow union brothers and sisters stood with regard to this MA lawmaker. I was mistaken of his current status, but I am glad many members feel the same way and I am sure we have sent a strong message. I have also corrected the letter seen below. Please feel free to keep passing it on. The New England Film Movement continues…

I have drafted a sample letter you can use to submit to the AFL-CIO. I am pleading with every member of a Union to read this letter, personalize, and e-mail or mail. The future of film in New England depends on us supporting film friendly candidates, not FILM ENEMYS!

To whom it may concern:
As a SAG and/or AFTRA dues paying member, I am appalled and strongly disappointed by the actions of MA Rep. Steven D’Amico of the 4th Bristol District. His actions, voiced and written and by his voting record in attacking the television and film industries, have had and will have a direct negative effect on fellow brothers and sisters of various unions that rely on the film industry for their living. While he has tried to “act” as a union friend, he has actually used his position to foster his own anti-union agenda. He should not be supported in any way, either by endorsements, money and or volunteers by any union when and if he runs for re-election in 2010. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,

The tent field (tent city) will have enough room for 40+ sleeping tents, 2 large enclosed tents, portable toilets, showers and a large fire pit. We are offering this because the farm is out of the way of any large town.

Also please include a brief paragraph in the body of the email explaining your experience and what departments you’ve worked with in the past, and what you prefer.
The positions available are as follows:

From Mark Huntington…
I am in great need of extras for the shoot on Monday, 8/17. They must be 21
and older, as the scene takes place in a bar. If you know of anyone who
would be interested, here is the info.
Date - Monday, 8/17
Location - Coventry, RI
Time - approximately 2 pm to 6 pm or so.
We will have a break until about 8:30. I have people I can use for the
night shoot, but I might need a few more.
I would need these people between 9 and 10 or 10:30.
The afternoon shoot is the most important one, so if people can make only
this, that’s fine.
I need people to play a crowd in the bar who is watching a baseball game on
tv. No experience is necessary.
If anyone is interested, they need to contact me as soon as possible, as I
must plan the shots, and knowing who will be there makes this much easier.
The best way to contact me is by e-mail. mchuntington89@yahoo.com

THE DRIVE-IN RETURNS? OUTDOOR MOVIES IN ESSEX THIS AUGUST
[August 3, 2009: Essex, MA] - While the Gloucester Drive-In has been gone from Cape Ann for over two decades now, a local cinema is bringing the outdoor movie experience back. For three consecutive Thursdays starting August 13, The Cape Ann Community Cinema (CACC) of Gloucester and Woodman’s of Essex will present three open-air films completely free of charge.“This is a great opportunity to give Cape Ann movie fans a unique experience,” says Co-CEO Steve Woodman, “though we don’t expect fried clams to replace popcorn as the all-time favorite movie snack.” The movies will be presented in the sizable parking lot behind the world famous seafood restaurant, Woodman’s of Essex at 121 Main Street (Route 133) in Essex. The movies will be shown on a 20’ inflatable movie screen, otherwise known as “Blimp.” Patrons are requested to bring lawn chairs, as there are sure to be more cars than good parking spaces from which to view the movie.“These shows are a little more labor-intensive than my usual sitting-on-a-couch-in-the-back-of-the-theater regimen,” jokes CACC Managing Director Robert Newton, “but it is so worth it to be able to share such a fun and memorable time with people.”The films that will be shown are: Madagascar 2 (August 13), Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (August 20) and The Goonies (August 27).Show time is between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, depending on when there is “good dark.” Patrons are encouraged to come early to stake out a good spot, listen to music and enjoy some time with their neighbors.

CAPE ANN COMMUNITY CINEMA RE-OPENS IN PERMANENT HOME IN DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER

After a week-long test run (showing the animated wonder “Sita Sings The Blues”), the year-round Cape Ann Community Cinema officially opens on Friday, July 10th with the thriller “Julia” starring Oscar winner Tilda Swinton. The cinema’s inaugural season ran October 2008 to May 2009 at the Gloucester Stage Company in East Gloucester. Now, the CACC as its known has a permanent home in Gloucester’s West End at 21 Main Street, in the 2700 sq. ft. above the St. Peter’s Club and Mystery Train Records.

The CACC, which is open 7 days a week during the summer and 5 days in the off-season, shows a variety of the best first-run independent, foreign and local films — as well as operas and ballets in HD — and frequently hosts filmmakers to present their films to an audience personally. The new location, a former function hall, features carpets, a 500 sq. ft. parquet dance floor, a wet bar and a stage, is fully handicapped accessible.

“Patrons notice something special about the space when they first walk in,” Newton remarks, “and I’m not just talking about the comfy chairs, couches and tables. It has long been a gathering place, and not to get all earthy-krunchy, but the room has a certain energy.” Newton attributes the feeling to the fact that it was originally part of the long-standing St. Peter’s Club, and adds, “If you’re from here, you’ve probably left your mark on that dance floor at some wedding or other celebration over the years. It feels like home.”

Free lifetime memberships are available to any patron who purchases a 10-ticket package for $60.00. Membership benefits include free after-hours parties and borrowing privileges from the cinema’s growing collection of DVD’s and film-related books. The reduced-cost tickets are a savings of $15-30 off the regular ticket price. The cinema is also available for rentals of all kinds, from weddings to PlayStation parties.

Newton is actively looking into adding a seasonal beer and wine license to complement the full array of snacks and food items. August 2010 holds the first of what Newton hopes to be many four-town incarnations of “The Cape Ann Film Festival.”
